A THIRSTY CROW

     Once a thirsty crow was flying to and fro in search of water. But he found no water anywhere. At last, he saw a pitcher nearby and flew to it. He tried to dip his beak but to no effect. Then he tried to upset the jar but failed to turn it over. The efforts only made him more thirsty. At last, he caught sight of some stones lying at hand. He picked up some of those and began to drop those into the pitcher. The water seemed to rise a little. So he went on doing it till the water came up within the reach of his beak. The crow now quenched his thirst by drinking as much as he liked.

একটি পিপাসার্ত কাক

      একদিন এক পিপাসার্ত কাক পানির সন্ধানে এদিক ওদিক উড়ছিল। কিন্তু সে কোথাও পানি খুঁজে পাচ্ছিল না। অবশেষে সে কাছেই একটি কলস দেখতে পেল এবং এটির দিকে উড়ে গেল। সে তার ঠোঁট ভেতরে ডুবানোর চেষ্টা করল কিন্তু কোনো কাজ হলো না। তারপর সে কলসি কাত করার চেষ্টা করল কিন্তু কাত করতে ব্যর্থ হলো। তার চেষ্টা শুধু তাকে আরো পিপাসার্ত করে তুলল। অবশেষে তার নাগালের মধ্যে কিছু পাথর দৃষ্টিগোচর হলো। সে এগুলোর কিছু নিল এবং এগুলো কলসের মধ্যে ফেলতে শুরু করল। পানি একটু উপরে উঠছে বলে মনে হলো। তাই সে এটা করলো যতক্ষণ না পর্যন্ত পানি তার ঠোঁটে পৌঁছায়। কাক এখন ইচ্ছামতো পানি পান করে তার তৃষ্ণা মেটালো।

     Once upon a time two friends went on a journey. They had to go through a forest on the way. As they came through the wood, they saw a bear approaching. Both of them became frightened, but suddenly one of them climbed up a tree. The other finding no other alternative, lay flat on the ground without breathing. The bear soon came up, put down its head and smelt his body. The bear took him to be  dead and went away. Seeing the bear going, the other man came down the tree. He then said to his friend, “What did the bear whisper into your ear?”

     Once in a cold winter morning when a villager was going to his field, he found a snake half dead with cold, lying by the side of the road. The villager took pity upon it, brought it home and placed it by the fireside. He then gave it warm milk and made the snake comfortable.

     When the snake became well, he began to play with the children of the villager and for a time, the snake behaved very well. But the snake was wicked to the backbone, and while playing one day with the children of the villager, he bit one of them. At this the villager became very angry and with his axe he killed the snake.

     Once a lion was sleeping in his den. He was disturbed by a mouse running over his body. He caught it and in anger, was about to kill it. The poor mouse begged for its life. He said, “Pardon me, king of beasts. I shall always be grateful to you if you spare my life for this time.” The lion had pity on him and let him off with a warning. The mouse promised to give any help to the lion in case of need. The lion laughed at the offer. He said, “You are a little animal. How could you help me?” After a few days, the lion was caught in a net and roared. He tugged and strained but to no effect. The mouse heard the lion’s roar and rushed to help him. He bit the net with his sharp teeth and at last cut it off. He thus set the lion free. Thus the great lion was saved by the little mouse.

      একদিন এক সিংহ তার গুহায় ঘুমাচ্ছিল। তার শরীরের উপর দিয়ে একটি ইঁদুর দৌড়ে যাওয়াতে সে বিরক্ত হলো। রাগে সে এটাকে ধরল এবং তাকে মেরে ফেলতে যাচ্ছিল। ছোট ইঁদুর তার জীবন ভিক্ষা চাইল। সে বলল, আমায় ক্ষমা করুন, পশুদের রাজা। যদি আপনি এইবার আমার জীবন রক্ষা করেন আমি সর্বদা আপনার প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞ থাকব।” সিংহের তার প্রতি দয়া হল এবং তাকে সতর্ক করে ছেড়ে দিল। ইঁদুরটি প্রয়োজনে তাকে যে কোনো ধরনের সাহায্য করার প্রতিজ্ঞা করল। সিংহ প্রস্তাবে হাসল। সে বলল “তুমি একটা ছোট প্রাণি। তুমি কীভাবে আমাকে সাহায্য করবে?” কিছুদিন পরে সিংহ একটি জালে ধরা পড়ে গর্জন করছিল। সে ছোটার জন্য চেষ্টা করল কিন্তু কোনো কাজে দিল না। ইঁদুর সিংহের গর্জন শুনল এবং উপকারীর সাহায্যের জন্য ছুটে গেল। সে তার তী¶্ন দাঁত দিয়ে জালে কামড় দিল এবং অবশেষে এটা কাটল। সে এভাবে সিংহকে মুক্ত করল। এভাবে বিশাল সিংহ ছোট ইঁদুরের মাধ্যমে রক্ষা পেল।

SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE

     A proud hare laughed at the tortoise for its slow motion. But the tortoise challenged the hare to run a race. At this the hare was much amused. So it said, “Come along, let’s fix a date for the race.” They fixed a date and a place. A fox agree to be the judge. The tortoise and the hare came to the starting point. The race began. The hare began to run very fast. It ran a mile in a few minutes. Soon it found the tortoise far behind. It became sure of success. It said to itself, “What’s the use of going so fast? Perhaps, the tortoise has gone only a few yards by this time. So, I can very well have a good sleep before the tortoise comes up.” So it  saying, the hare slept on the way. In the meantime the tortoise walked on and on. It did not stop anywhere. When it came near the hare, it saw the hare lying fast asleep. It smiled and quietly passed by the hare. Many hours passed. The hare woke up. It saw that it was already evening. It immediately got on its feet. It began to run very fast. But alas! The tortoise  had already gone far. It was already crossing the winning post. So, the tortoise won the race. It proves that slow and steady wins the race.

অধ্যাবসায়ের ফলেই সাফল্য লাভ হয়

      এক গর্বিত খরগোশ কচ্ছপের ধীর গতির কারণে উপহাস করল। কিন্তু কচ্ছপ খরগোশকে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতার জন্য আহ্বান করল এবং একটা দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতার জন্য রাজি হলো। এতে খরগোশ অনেক বিস্মিত হলো। তাই এটা বলল, “এস, চল দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতার জন্য একটা তারিখ নির্ধারণ করি। তারা একটা দিন ও স্থান নির্ধারণ করলো। একটা শিয়াল বিচারক হতে রাজি হলো। কচ্ছপ এবং খরগোশ প্রতিযোগিতা শুরুর জায়গায় আসলো। প্রতিযোগিতা শুরু হলো। খরগোশ খুব জোরে দৌড়াতে শুরু করল। এটা কয়েক মিনিটের মধ্যে এক মাইল পেরোলো। শীঘ্রই এটা দেখল যে কচ্ছপ তার থেকে অনেক পিছনে। এটা সাফল্য নিশ্চিত মনে করল। এটা নিজে নিজে বলল, “এত দ্রুত যাওয়ার দরকার কী? সম্ভবত কচ্ছপ এই সময়ে মাত্র কয়েক গজ অতিক্রম করেছে। তাই কচ্ছপ আসার আগে আমার একটা সুন্দর ঘুম হবে।” একথা বলে, খরগোশ পথিমধ্যে ঘুমিয়ে পড়ল। এই সময়ে কচ্ছপ হেঁটেই চলল। এটা কোথাও থামল না। যখন এটা খরগোশের নিকট এল, তখন দেখলো খরগোশ গভীর ঘুমে আচ্ছন্ন। এটা হাসল এবং নীরবে খরগোশকে অতিক্রম করল। অনেক সময় অতিবাহিত হলো। খরগোশ জাগ্রত হলো। এটা দেখলে যে তখন সন্ধ্যা হয়ে গিয়েছে। এটা তৎক্ষনাৎ দাঁড়িয়ে পড়লো। এটা খুব জোরে দৌড়াতে আরম্ভ করল। কিন্তু হায়! কচ্ছপ ইতিমধ্যে অনেক দুরে চলে গিয়েছে। এটা ইতিমধ্যে বিজয়স্তম্ভ পার হচ্ছিল। তাই কচ্ছপ দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতায় জিতল। এটা প্রমাণ করল “অধ্যবসায়ই সাফল্যের চাবিকাঠি।”

SHEIKH SAADI’S WIT

     Sheikh Saadi was a great poet. Once he was going to the court of the king of Iran. He took shelter in a rich man’s house on his way to the court. Sheikh Saadi was wearing a very ordinary and cheap cloth. The treatment he received in the rich man’s house offended him. But he did not say anything.

     On the next day Sheikh Saadi went to the court of the king and was received with honour. He stayed there for a few days. He composed some beautiful poems and entertained the king and his courtiers. He received rich gifts from the king. On his way to his village he again visited that rich man’s house. This time, the rich man was surprised to see Sheikh Saadi in a rich ornamental dress and treated him with the best of the foods and comfort.

     While eating, Saadi was surprised to see the rich delicious food and understood the rich man’s attitude. Sheikh Saadi then instead of eating the food, started putting them into the pockets of his rich cloth. This surprised the rich man. “Why are you putting the food into the pockets of your dress?” said the rich man. “I am putting them into the pockets of my dress because these foods are meant for my dress, not for me,” said Saadi. The rich man realized his earlier folly and became ashamed.

      শেখ সাদি ছিলেন একজন মহান কবি। একদিন তিনি ইরানের রাজার দরবারে যাচ্ছিলেন। তিনি রাজপ্রাসাদে যাওয়ার সময় একজন ধনী লোকের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় গ্রহণ করেছিলেন। শেখ সাদির গায়ে একটা খুব সস্তা এবং সাধারণ কাপড় ছিল। তিনি ধনী লোকের বাড়িতে যে ব্যবহার পেয়েছিলেন সেটা তাকে আঘাত দিয়েছিল। কিন্তু তিনি তাকে কিছু বললেন না। পরবর্তী দিন শেখ সাদি রাজ দরবারে গিয়েছিলেন এবং খুব সমাদর পেয়েছিলেন। তিনি সেখানে কিছুদিনের জন্য অবস্থান করলেন। তিনি কিছু সুন্দর কবিতা রচনা করেন এবং রাজা ও তার সভাসদদের আনন্দ দিলেন। তিনি রাজার কাছ থেকে মূল্যবান উপহার সামগ্রী পেলেন। তার গ্রামে ফিরে আসার পথে তিনি ঐ ধনী লোকের বাড়িতে পুনরায় গেলেন। এবার ধনী লোকটি শেখ সাদিকে মূল্যবান এবং সজ্জিত পোশাকে দেখে বিস্মিত হলেন এবং তাকে ভালো খাবার এবং আরাম দিয়ে আপ্যায়ন করলেন। খাওয়ার সময় সাদী মূল্যবান সুস্বাদু খাবার দেখে বিস্মিত হলেন এবং ধনী লোকের মনোভাব বুঝতে পারলেন। শেখ সাদি তখন খাবার খাওয়ার পরিবর্তে তার মূল্যবান পোশাকের পকেটে এগুলো ভরতে শুরু করলেন। এটা ধনী লোকটিকে বিস্মিত করল। “কেন আপনি এই খাবারগুলো খাওয়ার পরিবর্তে আপনার পকেটে রাখছেন?” ধনী লোক জিজ্ঞাসা করে। সাদি বললেন, “আমি এগুলোকে আমার জামার পকেটে রাখছি কারণ এই খাবার আমার পোশাকের জন্য, আমার জন্য নয়”। ধনী লোকটি তার পূর্বের ভুল বুঝতে পারে এবং লজ্জিত হয়।

But it forgot the past and also the kindness of the saint. One day, the tiger thought of making a hearty meal of him.  The saint who could read the mind of the tiger changed it back into the mouse.

      একদা এক গভীর জঙ্গলে একজন দরবেশ বাস করতেন। একদিন এক দুর্বল অসহায় ইঁদুর তাঁর চোখে পড়লো। দরবেশ এটাকে ভালোভাবে খাওয়ালেন। শীঘ্রই একটি বিড়াল তাঁর কুঁড়েঘরে এলো। তাই দরবেশ ইঁদুরটিকে বিড়াল বানিয়ে দিলেন। শীঘ্রই সেখানে একটি কুকুর আসলো এবং দরবেশ বিড়ালটিকে কুকুর বানিয়ে দিলেন। দরবেশ এবং কুকুর কিছু সময়ের জন্য সুখে বাস করলো। যাহোক, এক সন্ধ্যায়, তারা দেখল একটি বাঘ শিকারের খোঁজে সেখানে গর্জন করছে। কুকুরটি ভয়ে কাঁপতে লাগলো। তাই দরবেশ তৎক্ষণাৎ এটাকে একটি বাঘ বানিয়ে দিলেন। এখন বাঘ খুব সুখী বোধ করছিল। গর্বিতভাবে সে শিকারের উদ্দেশ্যে বেরিয়ে বনের অন্যান্য প্রাণীদেরকে আতঙ্কিত করে তুললো। কিন্তু এটা তার অতীত এবং দরবেশের দয়ার কথাও ভুলে গেল। একদিন বাঘ তাকে দিয়ে একটা সুন্দর খাবারের ব্যবস্থা করার চিন্তা করল। দরবেশ বাঘের মনের অবস্থা বুঝতে পেরে এটাকে পুনরায় ইঁদুরে রূপান্তরিত করলেন।

     Once upon a time there lived an old farmer. He had three sons who used to quarrel among themselves. One day, the sons were quarrelling again and the old farmer heard them. In order to teach them the value of unity he called his sons beside him and told them to bring him three sticks and some rope. The three sons went and brought the sticks and rope for their father. The old farmer then tied the sticks together with the rope. Then he asked his sons to break the bundle of sticks. The three sons tried and tried but they couldn’t break the bundle of sticks. Then their father untied the sticks and gave one stick to each of his sons. He told them again to break the sticks. This time they all broke their sticks easily. Then the old farmer told his sons that nobody could do any harm to them if they remained united.

     One day two rats stole a piece of bread. They failed to divide it in equal parts as both of them wanted the larger part. They fought for that. Lastly, they agreed to put up their problem to the monkey. All the animals of the forest knew him as the wiser animal. They went to the monkey and asked him to divide the bread into two equal parts. The monkey took a piece in each hand. “One piece is clearly bigger than the other.” said the monkey. So he bit off a part of the bigger piece. “That piece now became smaller than the other,” said the monkey. So he bit off a part of the bigger piece. That piece now became smaller than the other. The monkey, therefore, ate a part of the piece to make the other smaller. At last, there was only one small piece of bread left. The rats now begged the monkey to give that piece to them. The monkey wanted it for his fee and ate up that also. The rats indeed left the place becoming sadder and wiser.

      একদিন দুটি ইঁদুর এক টুকরা রুটি চুরি করল। যেহেতু তারা উভয়ই বড় অংশ চায় তারা এটা সমানভাবে ভাগ করতে ব্যর্থ হলো। তারা সেটার জন্য লড়াই করল। অবশেষে তারা তাদের সমস্যা বানরের কাছে উপস্থাপন করতে একমত হলো। বনের সকল প্রানী তাকে জ্ঞানী মনে করত। তারা বানরের কাছে গেল এবং রুটিটি সমান দু’ভাগে ভাগ করে দিতে বলল। বানরটি প্রত্যেক হাতে এক টুকরা করে নিল, “এক টুকরা স্পষ্টত অন্য টুকরার চেয়ে বড়”, বানরটি বলল। তাই সে বড় অংশ থেকে একটু টুকরা কামড় দেয়। “এই অংশ এখন অন্য অংশ থেকে ছোট হয়ে গেছে,” বানরটি বলে। তাই সে বড় অংশ থেকে একটু কামড়ে নেয়। এই অংশ এখন অন্য অংশ থেকে ছোট হয়ে গেছে। বানরটি, এভাবে, অন্য টুকরাকে ছোট করার জন্য এক অংশ খেয়ে ফেলে। অবশেষে, শুধু ছোট এক টুকরা রুটি অবশিষ্ট থাকে। ইঁদুরেরা এখন বানরের কাছে ঐ টুকরা তাদেরকে দেয়ার জন্য প্রার্থনা করে। বানর এটা তার মজুরি হিসাবে চায় এবং সেটাও খেয়ে ফেলে। ইঁদুরেরা যথার্থই দুঃখিত এবং জ্ঞানী হয়ে ঐ স্থান ত্যাগ করে।

     Once there lived a king in an island. There were green trees everywhere in the island. The king decided to build a magnificent palace in the island. So he ordered his men to cut down all the trees in the island. Some opposed the king’s idea but he did not pay heed to it. So people were compelled to carry out the king’s order. They cut down all the trees. As a result, a great change took place in the climate of the island. There was no rain. Crops did not grow. The hot sun shone over their heads. The island looked barren. The king called a meeting of the ministers and courtiers. They discussed the cause of the change in the atmosphere. At last an old courtier said that it was the curse of cutting down the trees. He suggested the king to plant trees. Everybody supported him. The king realised his fault and ordered the people to plant trees all over the island. The trees grew and gradually the island turned green again. Crops grew well, rain came and the people were happy.

      একদা এক দ্বীপে এক রাজা বাস করত। দ্বীপের সর্বত্র সবুজ গাছপালায় ভরপুর ছিল। রাজা দ্বীপটিতে একটা জমকালো প্রাসাদ নির্মাণের সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন। তাই তিনি তার লোকদের দ্বীপের সব গাছ কেটে ফেলার নির্দেশ দিলেন। কেউ কেউ রাজার সিদ্ধান্তের প্রতিবাদ করল কিন্তু রাজা এতে কোনো ভ্রুক্ষেপ করলেন না। তাই জনগণ রাজার আদেশ মানতে বাধ্য হলো। তারা সকল গাছ কেটে ফেলল। যার ফলে, দ্বীপের জলবায়ুতে একটা বড় ধরনের পরিবর্তন এল। সেখানে কোনো বৃষ্টি হতো না। ফসল জন্মালো না। গরম সূর্য তাদের মাথার উপর অবস্থান করছিল। দ্বীপটিকে মরুভূমির মতো দেখাল। রাজা মন্ত্রিপরিষদ এবং রাজসভাসদদের নিয়ে একটা সভা ডাকলেন। তারা জলবায়ুর পরিবর্তন সম্পর্কে আলোচনা করলেন। অবশেষে একজন বৃদ্ধ সভাসদ বললেন যে, এটা গাছগাছালি কেটে ফেলার ফল। তিনি রাজাকে বৃক্ষ রোপণের পরামর্শ দিলেন। সকলেই তাকে সমর্থন করল। রাজা তার ভুল বুঝতে পারলেন এবং লোকজনকে দ্বীপের সর্বত্র গাছ লাগানোর নির্দেশ দিলেন। গাছপালা জন্মালো এবং ক্রমান্বয়ে দ্বীপটি আবারো সবুজ প্রসাদে রূপান্তরিত হলো। শস্য ভালো জন্মালো, বৃষ্টি এল এবং লোকজন খুশি হলো।

He thought that if he would sell an egg each day, it would take a long time to become rich. He was hasty in nature and wanted to change his lot overnight. He wanted to have all the eggs at a time. He planned to kill the goose to get all the eggs. The farmer told the plan to his wife but she didn’t agree to the proposal. She asked him to be tolerant and not to be greedy. But the farmer didn’t pay any heed to his wife’s advice. One evening the farmer killed the goose and cut out the stomach of the goose. But there were no eggs in the stomach of the goose. Thus the greedy farmer lost everything.

      এক গ্রামে একজন কৃষক বাস করত। তার একটা বিস্ময়কর রাজহংসী ছিল। রাজহংসীটি প্রত্যেকদিন একটি করে সোনার ডিম পাড়তো। কৃষক এটা বাজারে বিক্রি করতো। সে এই টাকা দিয়ে খাবার, কাপড় এবং প্রাত্যহিক প্রয়োজনীয় জিনিস কিনতে পারতো। সে এমনকি প্রতিদিন কিছু টাকা বাঁচাতেও পারতো। কৃষকটি ধীরে ধীরে ধনী হতে লাগলো। কিন্তু কৃষক ছিল খুবই লোভী এবং ধৈর্যহীন। সে ভাবলো যদি সে প্রত্যেকদিন একটি করে ডিম বিক্রি করে তবে তার ধনী হতে অনেক সময় লাগবে। সে ছটফটে স্বভাবের ছিল এবং রাতারাতি তার ভাগ্যের পরিবর্তন ঘটাতে চেয়েছিল। সে সব ডিম একবারে চেয়েছিল। সে সবগুলো ডিম একসাথে পাবার জন্য রাজহংসীটা হত্যার পরিকল্পনা করল। কৃষক তার পরিকল্পনার কথা স্ত্রীকে বলল কিন্তু তার স্ত্রী প্রস্তাবে রাজি ছিল না। সে তাকে ধৈর্যশীল হতে বলল লোভী নয়। কিন্তু কৃষক তার স্ত্রীর উপদেশে কোনো কর্ণপাত করল না। এক সন্ধ্যায় কৃষক রাজহংসীটিকে হত্যা করল এবং হাঁসটির পেট কাটল। কিন্তু রাজহংসীটির পেটে কোনো ডিম ছিল না। এভাবে লোভী কৃষক সবকিছুই হারাল।

But the fox was very clever. He made a plan. He invited all the foxes living in the jungle to a meeting. As the fox was a good speaker, all the foxes came to the meeting to listen to him. The fox was pleased that it was a good gathering. He rose to speak and told them that he had made a great discovery. All the foxes became very eager to listen to him. He told them that their  tail was of no use rather it looked ugly and dirty. If they cut off their tail they would look more beautiful and more attractive. He also told them that he himself had cut off his tail to prove it. He brought out a knife and gave it to them to follow him. The foxes were convinced and they were about to do that. But among them was an old and wise fox. He understood the trick of the clever fox. He told the other foxes that the clever fox had not cut off its tail, but it had lost its tail falling in a trap. As he did not have a tail, he wanted the other foxes to cut off their tails. It was, in fact, an evil trick of the clever fox. All other foxes then understood the evil design of the clever fox. Finding no other way, the clever fox ran away from that place.

      এক বনে একটি ধুর্ত শিয়াল বাস করত। একদিন বনের মধ্য দিয়ে অতিক্রম করার সময় সে ফাঁদে পড়ল। সে ফাঁদ থেকে বের হতে পারল কিন্তু তার লেজ হারাল। লেজ ছাড়া শিয়ালকে খুব অস্বাভাবিক এবং অ™ভুত লাগছিল। শিয়াল তার লেজ হারিয়ে খুব হতাশা এবং লজ্জাবোধ করছিল। সে অন্য শিয়ালের সামনে আসছিল না কারণ তারা তাকে দেখে হাসাহাসি করত। কিন্তু শিয়ালটি ছিল খুব চালাক। সে একটি পরিকল্পনা করল। সে বনে বসবাসরত সকল শিয়ালদের আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়ে একটা সভা ডাকল। যেহেতু শিয়াল একজন ভালো  বক্তা ছিল, সকল শিয়াল তার কথা শোনার জন্য সভায় আসলো। শিয়াল এত ভালো সমাগম দেখে আনন্দিত হয়েছিল। সে বলার জন্য দাঁড়ালো এবং বলল যে সে বিরাট একটি আবিষ্কার করেছে। সকল শিয়াল তার কথা শোনার জন্য খুব আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করল। সে তাদের বলল যে তাদের লেজ কোনো কাজে লাগে না বরং এটা কুৎসিত এবং নোংরা দেখায়। যদি তারা তাদের লেজ কেটে ফেলে তবে তাদেরকে আরো সুন্দর ও আকর্ষণীয় দেখাবে। সে তাদের আরো বলে যে সে নিজেই এটা প্রমাণ করার জন্য তার লেজ কেটে ফেলেছে। সে একটা ছুরি বের করে এবং তাকে অনুসরণ করার জন্য এটা তাদেরকে দেয়। শিয়ালরা প্রভাবিত হয়েছিল এবং তারা এটা করতে যাচ্ছিল। কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে এক বৃদ্ধ এবং জ্ঞানী শেয়াল ছিল। সে ধুর্ত শিয়ালের কৌশল বুঝতে পেরেছিল। সে অন্য শিয়ালদের বলল যে, ধুর্ত শিয়াল তার লেজ কাটেনি, বরং এটা ফাঁদে পড়ে এর লেজ হারিয়েছে। যেহেতু তার লেজ নেই, সে চেয়েছিল অন্যান্য শিয়ালদেরও তাদের লেজ কেটে দিতে। এটা ছিল, বাস্তবে ধুর্ত শিয়ালের এক ঘৃন্য কৌশল। অন্যান্য সকল শিয়ালরা তখন ধুর্ত শিয়ালের খারাপ চিন্তার কথা বুঝতে পারল। অন্য কোনো উপায় না পেয়ে, চতুর শিয়াল এলাকা ছেড়ে দৌড়ে পালিয়ে গেল।

      একদিন যখন পিঠে করে লবণের বোঝা নিয়ে ফিরছিল, খানদিয়া নদীতে পড়ে গেল। সে বুঝতে পারল যে তার পতন বস্তার ওজন কমিয়ে দিয়েছে কারণ লবণ পানিতে গলে গেছে। পরের কিছুদিন খানদিয়া রোজ স্বেচ্ছায় পানিতে পড়ে গেল। খানদিয়া যেভাবে আচরণ করছিল তাতে ভোলা বিরক্ত হলো কারণ ব্যবসায়ে তার অনেক ক্ষতি হচ্ছিল। সে খানদিয়াকে শিক্ষা দেয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল। পরের দিন লবণের বোঝার পরিবর্তে সে খানদিয়াকে তূলার বস্তা দিল। খানদিয়া পরিবর্তনটা বুঝতে পারল না। তার পরিকল্পনা অনুযায়ী, সে পানিতে পড়ে গেল এবং বস্তাগুলো ভিজে গেল। কিন্তু বোঝাগুলোকে দুঃসহ মনে হওয়ায় সে অবাক হলো। তার প্রভুও তাকে পিটানো শুরু করল। খানদিয়া তার শিক্ষা পেল এবং ভালো আচরণ করা শুরু করল।

Actually they were afraid of him when he was alive. After his death people got relief from that fear.

     বঙ্গানুবাদ: অনেক দিন আগে বিরাট সিং নামে একজন খুব নিষ্ঠুর রাজা ছিলেন। তিনি বিজয় নগর রাজ্য শাসন করতেন। রাজ্যের নাগরিকরা তার নিষ্ঠুরতার জন্য তাকে ভয় করত। জ্যাক নামে তার একটা কুকুর ছিল যেটাকে তিনি অন্য যেকোনো কিছু থেকে অধিক ভালবাসতেন। এক বিষণ্ণ সকালে জ্যাক মারা গেল। বিরাট সিং কুকুরটির শেষকৃত্য অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করলেন। সমস্ত নগরী শোক সভায় উপস্থিত হলো। লোকজন তাকে এত ভালবাসে তা দেখে বিরাট সিং খুব খুশি হলেন। তার মনে হলো তিনি পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় রাজা। কিছুদিন পর বিরাট সিং মারা গেলেন, কিন্তু তার শেষকৃত্য অনুষ্ঠানে কেউ এলো না। আসলে তার জীবিতাবস্থায় তারা তাকে ভয় করতো। তার মৃত্যুর পর জনগণ সেই ভীতি থেকে পরিত্রাণ পেল।

      বঙ্গানুবাদ: এক ছিল ধনী লোক। তার ছেলের কিছু বদ-অভ্যাস ছিল। ধনী লোকটি তার ছেলেকে ঠিক করতে পারছিল না। তাই সে তার ছেলেকে একজন পÊিতের নিকট নিয়ে গেল। পÊিতটি ছেলেটিকে নিয়ে একটু হাঁটতে বের হলেন। হঠাৎ তিনি হাঁটা থামালেন এবং ছেলেটিকে সেখানে জš§ানো একটি ছোট গাছকে উপড়ে ফেলতে বললেন। ছেলেটি সহজেই গাছটিকে তুলে ফেলল। তারপর জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তিটি ছেলেটিকে আরেকটু বড় গাছ দেখালেন। অল্প চেষ্টাতেই সে তা তুলতে পারল। এরপর জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তিটি একটি বড় গাছের দিকে নির্দেশ করলেন এবং ছেলেটিকে তা উপড়াতে বললেন। ছেলেটি তার যথাসাধ্য চেষ্টা করলো, কিন্তু পারলো না। সে বলল, “এটাকে তুলে ফেলা অসম্ভব।” তখন জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তিটি বললেন, “বদ-অভ্যাসের ক্ষেত্রেও এটা ঘটে। যখন সেগুলো সূচনাপর্বে থাকে তখন তাদের বাদ দেয়া সহজ, কিন্তু যখন সেগুলোর ভিত মজবুত হয় তখন সেগুলোকে উপড়ে ফেলা যায় না।” জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তিটির সাথে কাটানো সময়টুকু ছেলেটির জীবনকে আমূল পরিবর্তন করে দিলো।

So the wind failed. Now was the turn of the sun to show its strength. It began to shine. It became hotter and hotter. Ultimately, the man was compelled to remove the coat. The wind lost and the sun won.

      বঙ্গানুবাদ: একদা সূর্য ও বাতাসের মধ্যে একটি চমৎকার প্রতিযোগিতা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছিলো। এটা দেখার বিষয় ছিল যে তাদের মধ্যে কে অধিকতর শক্তিশালী। বাতাস নিজেকে এবং নিজের ক্ষমতা নিয়ে খুব গর্ব বোধ করত। সে বলল, “এমনকি শক্তিমান মেঘও আমাকে কুর্ণিশ করে। তারা জানে আমি তাদের তাড়িয়ে দিতে পারি। তাই আমার সামনে তুমি একটা তুচ্ছ জিনিস।” সূর্য বললো, “সময়ই বলে দেবে দুজনের মধ্যে কে অধিকতর শক্তিশালী।” শীঘ্রই তারা একজন মানুষকে আসতে দেখল। সে একটি কোট পরে ছিল। সূর্য বলল, “চল দেখি আমাদের মধ্যে কে লোকটিকে কোটটি খুলতে বাধ্য করতে পারে।” বাতাস প্রথমে চেষ্টা করলো। এটা জোরে আরো জোরে বইতে শুরু করল। কিন্তু লোকটি কোট খোলার পরিবর্তে তা আরো বেশি করে জড়িয়ে ধরল। তাই বাতাস ব্যর্থ হলো। এবার সূর্যের নিজের শক্তি দেখানোর পালা। এটা কিরণ দেয়া শুরু করল। এটা অধিকতর উষ্ণ হয়ে উঠলো। ফলে, লোকটি কোট খুলে ফেলতে বাধ্য হলো। বাতাস হেরে গেল এবং সূর্য জয়ী হলো।

THE DOVE AND THE BEE

     Taking pity on the bee, it at once plucked a broad leaf and threw it near the bee. The bee climbed on the leaf, dried its wings and flew away. It was full of gratitude for the good natured and generous dove. After a few days the bee found that a cruel hunter was aiming at the dove. Seeing this, it flew directly to the hunter’s hand. It settled lightly on it and stung him as he was just to shoot. The hunter missed the aim. He cried out with pain. In the meantime, the dove flew away. The bee had made a good return for the help of the dove.

      বঙ্গানুবাদ: একদিন একটি মৌমাছি দুর্ভাগ্যবশত একটি খরস্রোতা নদীতে পড়ে গেল। পানির শক্তিশালী স্রোত এটাকে ভাসিয়ে নিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। সেই সময়ে একটি ঘুঘু একটি গাছের ডালে বসে ছিল। তার চোখ মৌমাছিটির উপর পড়ল এবং এটির দুর্দশা দেখল।

      মৌমাছিটির ওপর দয়াবশত, সে একটা চওড়া পাতা ছিঁড়ল এবং মৌমাছিটির নিকটে ছুঁড়ে মারল। মৌমাছিটি পাতাটির উপর উঠল, পাখা শুকালো এবং উড়ে চলে গেল। তার মন সদয় ও মহান ঘুঘুটির প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতায় পরিপূর্ণ হলো। কিছুদিন পর মৌমাছিটি দেখলো যে এক নিষ্ঠুর শিকারী ঘুঘুটির দিকে নিশানা করছে। এটা দেখে, সে সরাসরি শিকারীর হাতের দিকে উড়ে গেল। তার উপর আলতো করে বসলো এবং সে গুলি করার মুহূর্তে হুল ফোটালো। শিকারী লক্ষ্যভ্রষ্ট হলো। সে ব্যথায় চিৎকার করে উঠলো। ইতোমধ্যে, ঘুঘুটি উড়ে গেল। মৌমাছিটি ঘুঘুটির সাহায্যের ভালো প্রতিদান দিল।

      বঙ্গানুবাদ: একদা এক কুকুর এক টুকরো মাংস ভাগ্যক্রমে পাওয়ার আশায় একটি মাংসের দোকানের নিকট অপেক্ষা করছিল। শীঘ্রই সে একটি সুযোগ পেল। দোকানটিতে অনেক খরিদ্দারের আগমন ঘটলো। সে তাদের সাথে কথা বলতে এবং মাংস বিক্রি করতে খুব ব্যস্ত ছিল। ইতোমধ্যে কুকুরটি দোকান থেকে কোনভাবে একটুকরো মাংস পেল এবং যতদ্রুত সম্ভব পালিয়ে গেল। সে একটি নদীর তীরে পৌঁছাল এবং ব্রিজ দিয়ে নদীটি পার হতে চাইলো। ব্রিজে উঠে কুকুরটি পানিতে নিজের প্রতিচ্ছবি দেখল। সে দেখলো যে একটি কুকুর তার মুখে এক টুকরো মাংস নিয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। কুকুরটির খুব লোভ হলো এবং ঐ মাংসটিও পেতে চাইল। তাই সে ঐ মাংসটি পাওয়ার জন্য নদীতে ঝাঁপ দিল। কিন্তু নদীর শক্তিশালী স্রোতে সে শীঘ্রই ভেসে গেল। এভাবে কুকুরটি তার লোভের জন্য শাস্তি পেল।

      বঙ্গানুবাদ: স্কটল্যান্ডে এক রাজা ছিল। তার নাম ছিল রবার্ট ব্রুস। তিনি ছয় বার ইংল্যান্ডের সাথে লড়াই করেছিলেন। কিন্তু প্রত্যেকবারই তিনি করুণভাবে পরাজিত পরাজিত হন। তিনি তাঁর জীবন বাঁচাতে পালিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন। তিনি একটি গুহায় আশ্রয় নিয়েছিলেন সেখানে নিজেকে লুকিয়ে রাখলেন। হতাশায় তিনি তাঁর সকল আশা ত্যাগ করলেন। তিনি খুব বিষন্ন অবস্থায় ছিলেন।

      কিন্তু একদিন তিনি ঐ গুহায় একটি মাকড়সা দেখতে পেলেন। মাকড়সাটি গুহার ছাদে পৌঁছানোর চেষ্টা করছিল যেখানে ওটার জাল ছিল। ওটা তার জালে পৌছানোর জন্য ছয়বার চেষ্টা করলো, কিন্তু প্রতিবার পিছলে নেমে গেল। এবার রাজা কৌতূহলী হলেন এবং সতর্কভাবে মাকড়সাটিকে লক্ষ করলেন। তিনি এটা দেখে অবাক হলেন সে মাকড়াসাটি হাল ছাড়লো না এবং ছাদে পৌঁছানোর চেষ্টা চালিয়ে গেল। সপ্তম বারের প্রচেষ্টায় মাকড়সাটি ছাদে তার জালে পৌঁছাতে সফল হলো। ঘটনাটি রাজা ব্রুস-এর সাহস জাগিয়ে দিল। তিনি নবায়িত শক্তি লাভ করলেন। তিনি তার সৈন্যদের একত্র করলেন এবং আরেকটি যুদ্ধ করলেন। এবার তিনি নতুন তেজ ও উৎসাহ নিয়ে যুদ্ধ করলেন এবং অবধারিতভাবে বিজয়ী হলেন।

      নদীর দেবী মারকারী তার কান্না শুনতে পেলেন এবং তার নিকট হাজির হলেন। তিনি তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন কেন সে কাঁদছে। কাঠুরে তাকে বলল যে তার মাত্র একটা কুড়াল ছিল যা সে পানিতে হারিয়ে ফেলেছে। দেবীটি সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই পানিতে ঝাঁপ দিলেন ও একটি সোনার কুড়াল নিয়ে ফিরলেন। তিনি কাঠুরের কাছে জানতে চাইলেন ওটা তার কিনা। কিন্তু কাঠুরে না-সূচক উত্তর দিল। তখন দেবী আবার ঝাঁপ দিলেন এবং একটি রূপার কুড়াল নিয়ে ফিরলেন। এবারও কাঠুরে ওঠা নিতে অসম্মতি জানাল। তৃতীয় বারে, তিনি একটি লোহার কুড়াল নিয়ে আসলেন। এবার কাঠুরে আনন্দে চিৎকার করে উঠল, “এটা আমার কুড়াল।” দেবী তাকে তিনটি কুড়ালই দিয়ে দিলেন। কাঠুরে আনন্দে আপ্লুত হলো এবং দেবতাকে ধন্যবাদ দিয়ে বাড়ি চলে গেল।

      বঙ্গানুবাদ: একদা রোমে এক দাস ছিল। তার প্রভু খুব নিষ্ঠুর ছিল। তাই সে একদিন একটি বনে পালিয়ে গেল। সেখানে সে একটি গুহায় বাস করতে গেল। সে গুহায় ঘুমাচ্ছিল। হঠাৎ, সে একটি সিংহের গর্জন শুনে জেগে উঠলো। সে সেখানে একটি সিংহ দেখতে পেল। সিংহটি খোঁড়াচ্ছিল। দাসটি সিংহটির থাবায় একটি কাঁটা দেখতে পেল। সে তা বের করে দিল। সিহটি স্বস্তি পেল। উভয়ে বন্ধু হয়ে গেল।

      একদিন দাসটি তার প্রভুর লোকদের নিকট ধরা পড়ল। তার প্রভু তাকে একটি ক্ষুধার্ত সিংহের সম্মুখে নিক্ষেপ করার আদেশ দিল। যখন দাসটিকে সিংহটির সামনে নিক্ষেপ করা হলো, সিংহটি তাকে হত্যা করল না। এটা ছিল সেই সিংহটি। সিংহটি তার পা চাটতে লাগলো। এটা দেখে সবাই অবাক হয়ে গেল। দাসটিকে তখন মুক্ত করে দেয়া হলো। আর পুরস্কার হিসেবে তাকে সিংহটি দেয়া হলো।

      বঙ্গানুবাদ: একদা এক ছোট শহরে একজন অন্ধ লোক বাস করত। যখনই রাতের বেলা সে বাইরে যেত, সে সর্বদা হাতে করে জ্বলন্ত প্রদীপ বহন করত। এমনই এক অন্ধকার রাতে সে হাতে জ্বলন্ত প্রদীপ নিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। এক দল লোক ঐ পথ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। তারা অন্ধ লোকটিকে দেখলো এবং তাকে উপহাস করল। তারা বলল, “ওহে, অন্ধ মানুষ, কেন তুমি জ্বলন্ত প্রদীপ বহন কর? তুমিতো অন্ধ এবং কিছুই দেখতে পাও না।” অন্ধ লোকটি বিনীতভাবে উত্তর দিল, “এই প্রদীপটি আমার জন্য নয়, বরং তোমাদের জন্য যাদের চোখ আছে। তোমরা হয়ত একজন অন্ধ লোককে রাতের বেলা আসতে দেখতে পাবে না এবং তাকে ধাক্কা দিবে।” তারা লজ্জিত হলো এবং ক্ষমা চাইলো।
